Great Esker Park Nature Programs

In the Nature Exploration classes, kids will learn how glaciers of unimaginable size shaped GEP 10,000 years ago and will discover wonderful examples of plants and animals that inhabit the park as well as the various ecosystems eager to be explored.

The Nature Programs include a lot of shallow water nature exploration. Incoming and outgoing tides provide exploration that is ever changing and often reveals’ surprises that will provide a lifetime of great childhood memories!


Rovers (Ages 4-5)
Participants will "rove" the park from the George A. Clark Jr. Nature Center to the Back River. These short hikes along with stories, arts and crafts, and plenty of hands-on nature discovery will introduce the participants to the basics of how the park works!

Discoverers (Ages 6-7)
Participants will discover the fundamental concepts of the science of the park as they uncover the web of relationships between the physical elements and the bugs, birds, fish and plants through group walk-abouts and competitions. Hikes, stories, nature crafts, games, contests and plenty of hands-on nature discoveries will bring into focus some of the lesser-known mysteries of the park.

Voyagers (Ages 4-7)
This program is designed for children Ages 4-7 and will spend the afternoon traveling around the park experiencing all the wonders that GEP offers.Short hikes, nature exploration, arts and crafts are all part of a day at ESKER!

Jr. Conservation Club (Ages 8-12)
Learn about ecology in Great Esker Park and the Back River. Through hands on learning, games, activities, getting in the mud, dirt and water, kids will experience nature and learn about the interaction between the animals, plants, and the local environment as a whole. New England Wildlife Center will provide additional resources to enhance the learning experience.

Required
  • Weymouth Recreation requires an up to date health record to be submitted prior to a child attending our summer program. This is for the health and safety of participants and staff.
  • A Weymouth Recreation T-shirt and photo I.D. are required.

Weather Information
  • These programs are “rain or shine.” Particularly hard rain/thunder lightening will drive the programs under shelters or into the building; otherwise they will continue to explore nature - please dress accordingly.
